The Swedish ship Poseidon has fired warning shots toward a rubber speed boat from the Italian navy. No one was injured in this incident.

– I can confirm that warning shots were fired from the Poseidon, no one was injured and no one was in danger, says Ewa Moncure, the spokesperson for Frontex, the EU border agency.

The incident occurred at 20:00 o’clock on Monday evening, six to eight miles off the Libyan coast, as a rubber speed boat has approached the Swedish ship Poseidon at a high speed, and it’s crew failed to respond quickly enough when they ware asked to identify themselves by the Swedish ship.

– I just know that an incident has taken place and that no one has been injured. I understand that the crew of the rubber speed boat did not contact our vessel as they approached. The norm, especially in these waters, is to identify themselves before approaching, said Johnny Åberg, a communicator for the Swedish Coast Guard .

According to Åberg, there is no fixed armament on the Poseidon, but the crew has arms. The Pseidon vessel is participating in the EU operation Triton in the Mediterranean where they help in rescuing migrants heading to Europe. On Tuesday, the Poseidon picked up 665 people in various locations in the Mediterranean. The Swedish Coast Guard has so far saved 3,539 people during this mission.
