John Kerry, the US secretary of state, said today in London that the United States is ready to hold military talks with Russia on Syria, despite the continuation of Russia’s military build up in and the deployment of fighter jets there, according to the New York Times.

The Russian support for the regime in Syria has significantly increased in recent weeks, by establishing an air base near Latakia and deploying fighter jests there in recent days, including four Sukhoi SU-27 fighter jets, and four large Hip troop-transport helicopters and four Hind helicopter gunships, a senior US official in Washington said.

Russia also deployed the T-90 modern tanks and howitzers and armored personnel carriers at the airport, and advanced weapons appeared to be defensive rather that engage in combat operations. Two hundred Russian marines were also deployed at the base, and temporary housing was built for as many as 1500 personnel.

Kerry said that the primary objective of the talks with Russia would be to help “identify some of the different options available to us as we prepare for the next steps in Syria.”

Kerry also said the the Obama administration has not changed it’s primary objectives in Syria : The defeat of ISIL and to reach a political solution for the conflict there.
