Swedish police warns of a significant increase in the wave of home robberies, which increases at this time of year! Thefts have risen to 40 % during the Lucia holiday and Christmas.

Thefts are expected to increase during the New Year’s holiday when many people go out to celebrate in public places and watch the fireworks display, leaving their homes a prey for thieves who exploit the darkest time of the year to commit their robbery.

Thefts have also increased during Christmas, when many people left their to celebrate with relatives and friends, and maybe even stay the night, which gave thieves a great opportunity to rob their homes.

Police Inspector Henrik Jönsson says that thieves are becoming more intelligent than before! They usually enter the house very quickly, through windows or doors, and get out in less than one minute before the arrival of police security.

Jönsson confirmed that police examin the DNA, if any traces of fingerprints, hair or sweat, and compare the results with the European records, because a lot of thieves may be from outside Sweden and have no records here.

Jönsson also said that it is necessary to have an alarm system, but because of the speed with which the theft occurs, the alarm system does not prevent the theft in itself, but at least the sound of the siren will limit the thief’s freedom in robbing the house and his/her ability to concentrate.

Therefore, police advises to take precautions and try to fool the thieves by turning the lights and TV on during New Year’s Eve and when not at home, so the would be thief will not know that the house is empty.

You should also use exterior lights that illuminate automatically in the dark when someone approaches the house to scare them away.

You should also form and participate in your neighborhood watch to monitor each others’ homes when one is absent, and ask them to empty your mailbox so thieves will not even know that you are away for some time.
