Italian Navy and Coast Guard rescued more than 2000 refugees who were aboard inflatable boats in the Mediterranean today.

Most of the refugees were from African countries and are believed to have boarded the boats from the Libyan coast that are not subject to government control.

Italian navy has rescued 570 people, while the coast guard rescued 780 people, in addition to 730 people rescued in various operations today, they were all taken to the Italian island of Sicily.

Italian authorities believe that the number of refugees will increase significantly in the coming period due to the improved weather conditions, which has become warmer, encouraging immigrants to take the sea route to Europe.
