Top asylum seekers

Syrian refugees are in the forefront of the numbers of asylum seekers in the EU for the tenth consecutive month, according to a report of the European Asylum Support office “EASO”, which stated that the number of asylum seekers from Syria amounted to 38 190 in February 2016, according to records in the European Union, an increase of 14% compared to January, and more than four times the level recorded in February 2015.

At the same time, asylum applications submitted by Afghan citizens in the same month have decreased, while the rate of asylum applications from all other major nationalities rose by between 2% and 34%.

The number of Iraqi citizens who applied for asylum in the EU came in second place (13 368), while the number of Afghan asylum seekers has fallen to third place (12 625).

The three nationalities, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan combined amount to nearly 60% of all applicants for asylum in the European Union.
